💰 What Is a Funding Rate?
In traditional futures, contracts expire on a set date. Perpetual futures (perps) never expire — so they use a mechanism called the funding rate to keep the perp price close to the spot price.
Every 8 hours (on most exchanges), one side pays the other:
- Positive funding: longs pay shorts — the market is bullish/overleveraged to the upside
- Negative funding: shorts pay longs — the market is bearish/overleveraged to the downside
Why Traders Care
Extreme funding rates signal crowded positioning. When funding is extremely positive, it often means too many traders are long, and a correction is more likely. Skilled traders use funding rate data to:
- Identify overleveraged conditions (mean-reversion trades)
- Capture funding payments (delta-neutral carry trades)
- Confirm or contradict directional bias
